Because of the economic crisis, Senator McCain has suspended his campaign and wants to postpone the first debate.
That's sooooo presidential!
We should all be inspired and proud of John McCain for showing us what true leadership is.
He knows that a true leader can only deal with one crisis at a time.
In fact, a strong leader must take a "time out" from his leadership duties whenever such a crisis arises.
For it would be foolish to assume that a leader could, in any way, continue leading during difficult times. His presence, his words, and his going on with running things, could only serve to damage the situation further.
This is why John McCain has suspended his campaign.
Being in charge of a natinoal campaign is completely at odds with being in charge of a national crisis.
It shows that, as president, Senator McCain would, from time to time, be wise enough to declare himself "Not President" for a few days, whenever a crisis arises. For example, let's say there was an economic disaster that required strong and decisive leadership. John McCain would issue a "Not President" statement, so that he could go about helping with the crisis. He couldn't help the crisis if he stayed "President" during it.
Or let's say there was a natural disaster, such as a huge hurricane. President McCain would probably cancel all of his public appearances and make sure not to answer any questions from the media (or especially from critics). This way, without the burden of telling people what he's doing about the disaster, he can just actually DO THINGS to fix the disaster -- behind the scenes, where nobody can question him.
It's about time this country had a president that could show this kind of "Country First" attitude. Our current president has never declared "Not President" days, and he's even sometimes given public speeches during difficult times. I remember after September 11, when President Bush had the terrible judgment to make a speech from Ground Zero, in which he used the ill-advised line, "Roll on." Our citizens were extremely disappointed in the lack of leadership shown in such a move by President Bush.
What would a President McCain have done? He would have quietly, without that kind of distracting fanfare, killed Bin Laden. In fact, I bet President McCain would have been on the first plane allowed back into airspace, a gun slung across his back, trampling off into the caves of Afghanistan where he could follow Bin Laden straight to the gates of hell. He wouldn't have stayed in the U.S. -- our enemy was clearly in another country. What's the good of a president that just answers questions from the press, gives speeches, and tells people what he's going to do? A real leader just DOES IT, without wasting time explaining himself.
So we should all be in awe of a true leader like John McCain, who knows how to stop leading on one thing so he can lead on another thing, and who knows that the best way to lead our country in the right direction is to say nothing about what that direction will be.
